Gandhiji Busts - World Wide

12/01/2010

Albert Einstein once famously said of Mahatma Gandhi,” Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as hi in flesh and blood ever walked upon this earth.” Today, it appears certain that the Mahatma will be remembered in the centuries to come as a man of bronze and stone.

*65 busts and statues of Gandhi have come up all over the world since 2000; 15 statues installed in 2003-2004 alone

*Chile, Fiji, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago , Morocco, Syria, Tajikistan, Eghiopia all have one or more Gandhi statues

*The busts and statues were fashioned by sculptors Gautam Pal, Ram Sutar, Ramesh Bisht and Ratnabali Kant for ICCR

The installation of Mahatma Gandhi’s statues in city council offices, public parks and universities shows that he may have been a staunch critic of the developed world and its capitalist way of life but the weight of his moral philosophy has not been lost of the First World.

Arguing for his statue in the Parliament Square in 2007, London mayor Ken Livingstone told the BBC, “You get millions of people from all over the world who come to see Big Ben and the statue of Churchill and so on.  Here’s someone they would understand.  In a thousand years, they’ll still know who Mahatma Gandhi was where as if you wander round Trafalgar Square, the two generals there, you have to go and check the history books.”
