Gandhiji was on three day visit to Madurai in 1921. This visit to Madurai was of great importance that changed Gandhiji’s appearance to a simple way of dressing. Only during that visit to Madurai Gandhiji came across poor people without proper dress to cover their body. Only then he decided to part with his turban, upper garment and traditional Gujarati attire dhoti. Gandhiji stayed at a Gujarati merchant’s house at Madurai. Latter the house was converted to a Monument belonged to Lalji Kalyanji, a Gujarati merchant settled at Madurai. Few followers of Gandhiji are fighting for a noble cause to protect this monument which has greater significance that transformed Gandhiji to a strong and powerful personality.
